How to create a sub-category in WordPress

Sub-categories can be extremely useful when setting up a blog with lots of content, so in this guide I’ll be walking you through how to create a sub-category in WordPress.

What are sub-categories in WordPress? A sub-category is essentially the division of a category into smaller, more manageable parts. For example, you may have a news blog where you cover a wide variety of topics – you may have a top level category for ‘technology’ and then sub-categories for ‘smartphones’, ‘wearable tech’, ‘computers’ and ‘gaming’. This is also a good way to split up interests for readers.

In just nine easy steps, here’s how to create a sub-category in WordPress:

  1. Select ‘Categories’ under the ‘Posts’ menu.
  2. Create a new category by choosing your title, description and parent. Select the Parent at the category you want it to appear under (in this case, Learn Here).
  3. To make this new category show on your menu, select ‘Menus’ under ‘Appearance’.
  4. Find your new category in the Categories box on the Menus page. You may have to select ‘View All’ to see it.
  5. Check the box of the category/categories you want to add. Add them to the menu.
  6. You can then drag the new menu item(s) wherever you would like them.
  7. To add them as a sub-menu item, drag them under the parent category, then slightly to the right. It will snap in place and will be noticeable indented.
  8. Click Save.
  9. They will now appear on the page of the category to the right of the page. You will then be able to select the sub-category and view all the posts listed under it.
